⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Book Day of the Dead without preparing Hotels are saturated since April. Without reservations 6 months in advance, you will sleep 1 hour away from Oaxaca.
  • Buying mezcal at the supermarket: Flavorless industrial mezcal. Buy at a mezcaleria or directly in Santiago Matatlán (the «mezcal capital»).
  • Visiting Monte Albán at noon: No shadows on the site, direct sun, overexposed photos. Go at 8 AM or 4 PM.
  • Underestimating the nights: At 1,550 m, the nights are cool (12-15°C). Don't travel with just a t-shirt, even in May-June.
  • Haggling aggressively in Teotitlán: Zapotec weavers charge fair prices for 30–40 hours of work. Respect their prices; negotiate for a maximum of 5–10%.
  • Drinking tap water: Not potable. All hotels provide filtered water—bring a water bottle.
