About Chichén Itzá

The apogee of the Maya civilization

Chichén Itzá — one of the most important Maya cities in the Americas. Founded around 525 AD in the heart of the Yucatan jungle, it reached its peak between the 9th and 12th centuries. Today UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988 and designated «7th Wonder of the Modern World» In 2007, it welcomed 2.5 million visitors per year.

At the heart of the site, the Kukulkan Pyramid (The Castle) — a 24-meter architectural masterpiece with its 365 steps (1 for each day of the Mayan year). During the March and September equinoxes, the shadow forms a serpent descending the northern staircase. Pure magic.

Our on-site recommendation: 1 full day for the site (depart 7 am), ideally combined with a cenote (Ik Kil or Suytun) and the colonial city of Valladolid.

The 5 experiences signature

What we systematically recommend to our travelers. With, under each experience, the on-the-ground secret that makes the difference.

1 Kukulkan Pyramid El Castillo Chichen Itza
🏛️ The masterpiece

Pyramid of Kukulcan (El Castillo)

The site's king monument 24 m high, 365 steps (91 steps per side × 4 + top platform = 1 per day of the Mayan year). On the equinoxes (March/September), the sun draws a serpent descending the north staircase. Climbing the pyramid has been forbidden since 2008 - ground viewing only.

🤫 Secret Pro : Clap your hands at the foot of the stairs—the echo reproduces the cry of the sacred quetzal (Mayan mathematical acoustics).
💡 Tip: Arrive at opening (8 AM) — almost alone at the pyramid for 2 hours before the buses.
2 Temple of the Warriors and the Thousand Columns, Chichen Itza
Sacred Architecture

Temple of the Warriors & The 1000 Columns

Northeast of the site, the Temple of the Warriors dominated by Chac Mool sculptures. Before it stretches the Plaza of the Thousand Columns — a genuine Mayan market with finely sculpted columns. Obvious Toltec influences (similarities to Tula).

💡 Tip: rarely crowded mid-day as it's «hidden» behind Kukulkan — go at 11 am for photos without crowds.
🤫 Secret Pro : Search for sculptures of jaguars and eagles devouring human hearts—a reference to sacrifices.
3 Sacred Cenote of the Yucatán
Sacred Cenote

Sacred Cenote & Cenote Ik Kil

To the north of the site, the Sacred Cenote (60 m in diameter) where the Maya practiced sacrifices: objects of gold, jade, and skeletons have been found. A 5-minute drive from the site: the Cenote Ik Kil, The most iconic in the Yucatán for swimming (turquoise water + vines).

💡 Tip: Swimming is prohibited at Cenote Sagrado (a protected site), but Ik Kil is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; admission is $5.
🤫 Secret Pro : Cenote Suytun (15 min from Valladolid) is more secret and photogenic with its sunbeam at noon.
4 El Castillo, Chichen Itza
Sports architecture

Ball Game & El Caracol Observatory

The largest ball park Mesoamerica (168 m x 70 m). The Maya played a ritual sport here—the winning team's captain was sometimes sacrificed (the ultimate honor). Next to it, the'El Caracol Observatory, surprisingly modern, lined up Mayan astronomical calculations.

🤫 Secret Pro : whispering at one end of the field—the voice carries 168 m thanks to perfect acoustics (rare in the world).
👑 VIP Option: Private tour with a French-speaking archaeologist, $180 per group, guided access to 10+ structures.
5 Colonial Church of Valladolid, Yucatán
🏛️ Nearby colonial town

Valladolid & Cenote Zaci

45 minutes east, Valladolid is the perfect place to stop for lunch after visiting Chichén: a pale pink colonial town, San Servacio Cathedral, the pedestrian-only Calle 41, and the market. In the heart of the city, the Cenote Zaci Open to the public, it is one of the few urban cenotes in Mexico.

💡 Tip: lunch at Casa Italia (on the Plaza Principal) — perfect terrace after the effort of Chichén.
🤫 Secret Pro : Calle de los Frailes in the evening: a lit-up cobblestone alley, restaurants serving fresh fish, and a village-like atmosphere.

Passport valid for 6 months after return. FMM card (~$30) issued upon arrival; must be kept for the duration of the stay.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Visit at noon: 35°C, maximum crowd, worst time. Prioritize 8 AM - 10 AM absolutely. At worst, 4 PM - 5 PM at the end of the day.
  • Express tour from Cancun: 12-hour round trip for 1.5 hours on site, exhausting. Better to sleep in Valladolid to visit at 8am without rush.
  • Combining Tulum + Chichen Itza on the same day: 4 hours of driving for 2 hours of visiting each. Impossible to enjoy. Make 2 separate days.
  • Buy water and snacks on the site: 4-5x the normal price + plastic. Bring a reusable water bottle + snacks from the hotel.
  • Visiting in sandals/flip-flops: Rocky terrain, walk 3-4 km within the site. Sneakers or closed-toe sandals essential.
  • Climbing the pyramids Strictly forbidden since 2006 (following a fatal accident). Fine + expulsion. Respect the barriers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 most frequently asked questions about Chichen Itza.

How much time should I plan for the site?
3-4 hours minimum visit To see the main structures (Kukulkán, Temple of the Warriors, Ball Court, El Caracol, Sacred Cenote). 5-6 hours to also explore «Old Chichén» to the south and have time to take photos without pressure. Ideal combination: Chichén 8 am-12 pm + Ik Kil Cenote 12 pm-1 pm + lunch in Valladolid.
How to get there from Cancun or Merida?
From Cancun : 2 hours and 30 minutes via Highway 180D (toll: ~$30). ADO Premium bus: 3 hours and 30 minutes, ~$25. From Merida : 1h30 by highway, 2h by ADO bus, ~$15. Our advice : Private car with driver (~$120/day) to combine Chichén, a cenote, and Valladolid with complete flexibility.
Is the Equinox worth the trip?
Yes, IF you can handle the crowd. March 20-21 and September 22-23, around 4 p.m., the shadow serpent descends the north stairs for 30 minutes. It's magical. But 50,000+ visitors that day, impossible to take photos, hotels are booked solid 6 months in advance. Alternative 3-4 days before or after the equinox — barely visible phenomenon, normal crowd.
Can you climb the Kukulkan pyramid?
No, it's been forbidden since 2008. An American tourist died after falling in 2006, and INAH closed access. This ban also protects the monument (erosion from thousands of daily footsteps). One admires it from the ground—the perspective is more impressive from below anyway.
Is Chichen Itza really worth the visit?
Absolutely — it's one of the wonders of the world, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the most complete Mayan site in America. A must-see on a Yucatán trip. But be prepared: crowds, heat, hawkers. The The key is timing Arrive at 8 AM, leave at 12 PM. You'll leave transformed.
What budget should I plan for the day?
Site Entrance : ~$32 USD per person (2026). Cenote Ik Kil : $5. French-speaking audioguide : $5. Private car + driver (from Cancún or Mérida): ~$120 for 2–4 people. Valladolid Lunch : $15-25 per person. Total per person : $80–120 USD for a full day of guided, comfortable activities.
