🔥 Living Maya ritePascual Abaj & ajq'ij ceremonies
A 20-minute walk south of the village, on a wooded hill, stands a black rock venerated since pre-Classic times: Pascual Abaj, a Maya idol with a roughly carved human face. Every day, ajq'ij (Maya shamans) lead the faithful there for offering ceremonies: colored candles, flowers, alcohol, sometimes the sacrifice of a chicken, copal smoke. Petitions about health, work, marriage, harvests.
💡 Tip: a small local guide is essential (~$5), recruited at Galería Pop Wuj or the Museo Regional. They negotiate with the officiants so you can attend respectfully.
🤫 Secret Pro : never photograph without explicit permission. A 20-quetzal donation (~$3) to the shaman to pass. This is an active sacred site, not a tourist attraction.
