Costa Rica 10-day itinerary: the essentials when time is short

📅 7 May 2026 ✍️ TRISTAN MARTIN ⏱ 4 min read
In short: in 10 days in Costa Rica, the most efficient itinerary links San José → Arenal → Monteverde → Pacific coast. You focus on three or four regions, without rushing — volcano, cloud forest, and beaches. A Caribbean variant (Tortuguero) is possible.

Ten days is short for such a dense country, but plenty to grasp its essentials — as long as you don't try to see everything. After years building stays in the field, here's the10-day Costa Rica itinerary I recommend most, and how to adapt it.

The 10-day itinerary at a glance

StageNightsDon't miss it
San Jose1Arrival, getting started
Arenal / La Fortuna3Volcano, hot springs, hanging bridges
Monteverde2Cloud forest, zipline, hummingbirds
Manuel Antonio (Pacific)3Wildlife, beaches, rest

Nine nights, short drives, a real build-up all the way to the beach. It's the most rewarding framework when time is short.

The details, stage by stage

Day 1 — San José

Arrival and night in San Jose to recover from the flight. The adventure starts the very next day.

Days 2-4 — Arenal and La Fortuna

The volcano Arenal : hanging bridges, trails over the lava flows, the La Fortuna waterfall, and hot springs. The stage everyone loves.

Days 5-6 — Monteverde

On to Monteverde and its cloud forest: mist, orchids, hummingbirds, and a zipline over the canopy.

Days 7-9 — The Pacific coast

Down to Manuel Antonio : monkeys, sloths, postcard beaches. You slow down before the return.

Manuel Antonio beach lined with jungle, Costa Rica
The Pacific coast, the end-of-tour reward.

Day 10 — Return and departure

Road to San Jose, a stop at the Tárcoles bridge for the crocodiles, then the flight home.

The Caribbean variant (Tortuguero)

Prefer jungle and wildlife to the Pacific beaches? Replace Monteverde or part of the beach time with Tortuguero, the “mini-Amazon” accessible only by boat. It's another, wilder Costa Rica.

10, 15 or 21 days: which length to choose?

In 10 days, you see the essentials of the north and the central Pacific. With a few more days, you add Tortuguero, the Osa peninsula, or the southern Caribbean without rushing: see our 15-day itinerary, more complete.

Practical advice

For this tour, renting a car (ideally a 4×4) is the most flexible solution. Plan your budget and choose the right time with our guide When to go to Costa Rica. Want to book everything turnkey? Build your trip on Toucan Dynamics.
