Pura Vida · About Arenal

The volcano emblematic of Costa Rica

Arenal — the perfect 1,633 m cone that has dominated Alajuela province for 7,000 years, and made its spectacular return on July 29, 1968 with a major eruption that transformed the whole region. Since 2010 the volcano has entered a resting phase, but its hot springs still flow at 37°C, fed by its magma chamber. It is Costa Rica's most visited destination — and for good reason.

The region offers a combination rare anywhere in the world : an active volcano (still steaming) to observe, natural 37°C hot springs, dizzying waterfalls (La Fortuna, 75 m), a primary jungle sheltering sloths, toucans and caimans, and an 88 km² lake reflecting the volcanic cone. The Fortune, the main town, is the perfect base — restaurants, lodges, agencies on foot — 2h30 from SJO airport or 2h from Liberia (Pacific side).

Our field tip (DMC on site since 2018): 3 nights minimum in Arenal — 1 day volcano + springs, 1 day waterfall + hanging bridges, 1 day river safari or relaxation. Star combination: Arenal → Monteverde (3h via the lake + jeep-boat-jeep) or Arenal → Tenorio Bijagua (1h30, Río Celeste).

What we systematically recommend to our travelers. With, under each experience, the on-the-ground secret that makes the difference.

1 Arenal Volcano National Park El Silencio trail jungle
🌋 The resting giant

National Park & El Silencio trail

The Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal protects 12,000 hectares around the cone. The El Silencio trail (4 km, 2h) crosses the 1968 lava flows now recolonized by secondary forest — without the crowds of the main trails. Spectacular views of the volcano and the lake. The "1968" trail runs over the last flow. The holy grail: seeing the summit clear (rare in the afternoon).

⏰ Volcano visible mostly 6-9am 📷 El Silencio trail = best photo spot
2 Tabacón Hot Springs thermal springs La Fortuna Costa Rica
♨️ Volcanic wellness

Tabacón Hot Springs & thermal springs

The Tabacón Thermal Resort is home to Costa Rica's most iconic thermal river: water averaging 37°C gushing naturally from the volcano, flowing through lush jungle with waterfalls and cascading pools. Several experience levels: day pass, full board, or private pools at sunset (VIP option). A more intimate alternative: Eco Termales (booking required, more local atmosphere).

🌅 Sunset at Tabacón = magical 📅 Book 2 weeks ahead in high season

La Fortuna Waterfall & its 500 steps

6 km from town, the La Fortuna waterfall drops 75 m into a natural pool in the heart of the jungle. 500 steps to climb down (and back up). Swimming allowed — invigorating cool water. The secret: arrive before 8am to have the site almost to yourself before the morning buses. The Cerro Chato trail (extinct volcano, 1,100 m) is accessible from the entrance for seasoned hikers.

⏰ Before 8am = nearly deserted 💵 Entry ~$18, pay in cash

Gastronomy

Flavors of Costa Rica

The Tico cuisine is simple, generous, local. Rice and black beans as the base (the famous Gallo pinto), chicken, beef, plantain. For an authentic taste: go to a "soda" — a typical small family restaurant. High-altitude coffee (Tarrazú), artisan cacao, and tropical fruit galore.

Fried Eggs and Rice
~$5 — breakfast
Costa Rica's national dish: rice and black beans sautéed together with cilantro, onion, bell pepper, Lizano sauce. Served with eggs, fried plátano, queso fresco and tortillas. The quintessential breakfast in local sodas like Soda La Hormiga (La Fortuna).
Curry
~$8 — lunch
The typical Tico lunch: rice + beans + your choice of meat (chicken, fish, beef) + salad + plátano + sometimes an egg. The hearty, budget-friendly soda staple. Casado de pollo a la plancha = the version travelers love most.
Beef Stew
~$10 — dish
Costa Rican stew: beef simmered with yuca, plátano, chayote, corn, carrots. The traditional Sunday meal of Tico families. Restaurant Don Rufino in La Fortuna makes a renowned home-style version.
Fried plantains
~$3 — support
Green plátano (plantain) crushed and twice-fried until crispy. Served as a side with refried beans, guacamole or cream. The absolute snack of markets and sodas. Try it at Soda Viquez in La Fortuna.
☕ Tarrazú Coffee
~$3 — cup
Costa Rica's most renowned coffee, grown at altitude (1,200-1,700 m) in the Central Valley. Notes of citrus, chocolate, honey. Taste it at a coffee finca near La Fortuna or in a café-boutique. Café Britt or Don Juan = recognized labels.
Artisan chocolate
~$25 — tour
Costa Rica has produced cacao since pre-Columbian times. Cacao tour at Don Olivo Chocolate Tour or Rainforest Chocolate Tour : see the tree, taste the pulp, grind the beans, final tasting. 2h, $25-35/pers. The perfect souvenir.

Rain
CLIMATE

Green season = good deals

May-November: short tropical rains (1-2h in late afternoon), very green landscapes, active wildlife (breeding season), hotel rates down to -30%. Dry season Dec-Apr = tourist peak + top prices.

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa < 90 days

Passport valid 1 day after your return date is enough. No visa for Europeans (90 days). Exit tax included in your plane ticket. Entry card to complete on arrival at SJO/LIR.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Hoping to see the volcano erupt: resting phase since 2010. Still geologically active, but no visible lava flows. Don't be fooled by archive photos.
  • Visiting Arenal in 1 night: minimum 3 nights to enjoy it (volcano + springs + waterfall + bridges). 2 nights = too tight, frustrating.
  • Express day tour from San José: 6h round-trip drive + 4h on site = exhausting and incomplete. Better 3 nights on site.
  • Driving at night winding Route 702, no lighting, animals crossing. Drive in daylight only.
  • Drinking tap water without preparation: technically drinkable in La Fortuna, but prefer filtered water at the hotel to avoid upsetting your gut flora.
  • Ignoring the rainy season: some roads/excursions affected in Sept-October (peak). Check with your field advisor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

The 6 questions we're asked most often about Arenal and La Fortuna.

How many nights should you plan in Arenal?
3 nights minimum to enjoy it fully: 1 day Volcano + Tabacón Hot Springs, 1 day La Fortuna Waterfall + Mistico Hanging Bridges, 1 day river safari or springs relaxation. 4 nights ideal to add Tenorio (Río Celeste) or Río Toro rafting.
Is the volcano still active?
Geologically active but in a resting phase since 2010 (last major eruption 1968, last significant activity 2010). It won't spew lava during your stay, but the volcano remains impressive: its perfect cone, light fumaroles at the summit, and hot springs proving the magma chamber is very much there.
How to get there from Europe?
Air France direct Paris → San José (SJO) in 10h30. KLM via Amsterdam, Iberia via Madrid. Also US flights (Houston, Miami) with American/United. From SJO: 2h30 scenic drive to La Fortuna. Private transfers ~$140 or shared shuttle ~$55/pers.
When is the best time to go?
Sweet spot December to April (dry season, clear skies, volcano visible, but tourist peak + prices +30%). Green season May-November: greener landscapes, active wildlife, rates down to -30%, short late-afternoon rains. September-October: rain peak, some excursions affected.
Is Arenal suitable for families with children?
Yes — it's even Costa Rica's most family-friendly destination. Hot springs with kids' pools (Tabacón, The Springs), Mistico Hanging Bridges accessible from age 6, fun river safari, educational Ecocentro Danaus. Dedicated family resorts. Avoid La Fortuna Waterfall with little ones (500 steps).
What budget should I plan for?
Ultra-luxe (Nayara Springs, Tabacón): $500-1200 USD/night. Luxury resort (The Springs, Arenal Manoa): $250-450/night. 4★ Boutique (Observatory Lodge): $150-280/night. Local charm (Country Inn, Cabinas): $60-130/night. Meals: $5 (local soda) to $40 (high-end restaurant). Excursions: $40-90/pers.
